funky little baby pramChoice is a good thing and modern life affords us lots of choice. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. Take choosing prams for example. In the olden days you would most likely have had a big black perambulator. Nowadays you choose from a wide selection of prams, buggies (forward or rear-facing), travel systems, three-wheelers and four-wheelers. And once you’ve whittled down the type of pram you want, you’ve got to think about brands, fabrics and accessories. Exhausting.

So how do you go about picking the right pram for your funky little baby? Everyone has different needs from a pram, not to mention personal preferences, but this is what I did...

Newmarket is probably best known for horses but this weekend it was all about the Newmarket Baby Show.Newmarket Baby Show logo

It was terrific to see mums, dads and grandparents so enthusiastic about our funky, organic baby clothes. People who touched them were impressed by the quality and softness of the organic cotton and bamboo – particularly our bamboo denim range as jeans and dungarees can often be quite stiff and uncomfortable for little ones.  And of course the fabulous bright colours went down a treat for parents fed-up with boring pastels!

FairTradeOne of our founding principles at Sadie & Frank is that all our funky organic baby clothes must be ‘ethical’. But what exactly does that mean? Well, one of the things it means is that we like to source baby clothes that are made from Fairtrade organic cotton.

You’re probably familiar with the Fairtrade mark from your grocery shopping – coffee, tea, chocolate etc are all well established products where you can buy Fairtrade – but it’s also a growing trend for clothing. Cotton is a vital to the global textile industry and to the social and economic development of developing countries and when cotton farmers sell their produce Fairtrade they get a much better deal.

Wind_Farm_Playsuit

As well as receiving a fair and stable Fairtrade price for their cotton, they receive a Fairtrade premium to be invested in community projects such as a school, health centre, equipment or a well. Buying or producing a product made from Fairtrade certified cotton contributes to fighting poverty and to sustainable development for some of the world’s most marginalised cotton farmers.

Flower-Cord-Dress-LifestyleThis Funky Friday we are loving this gorgeous flower cord baby dress from Kite Baby. Of course, like all our funky baby clothes it's made from organic cotton but this dress is a bit different as it's actually very fine corduroy.

Now that the weather is starting to feel more spring-like this is a perfect dress to transition baby to the warmer weather - just layer it up with a long-sleeve vest and perhaps a cardigan.

Funky Little Baby Guide to … Stressfree Bathtime

BathtimeThere’s a reason why some maternity wards don’t let you leave hospital until they’ve shown you how to bath your baby! Washing a wriggling, crying baby is not an easy thing to do! So we’ve created the Funky Little Baby Guide to Stressfree Bathtime!

For me, the stressfulness of baby bathtime began before my first funky little baby was even born! I was so overwhelmed with the choice of baths in John Lewis that I broke down in tears in the middle of the store while seven months pregnant!  I eventually settled for a bath that provided some support which is a great help when you you’re trying to hold a wet, slippy baby!

OK, so you’ve got your bath (and baby!), what’s next? Well, first of all, get yourself prepared. Gather all the things you’ll need before you start – towel, clean clothes, nappy and skincare products (if using).  Make sure everything is within easy reach and open any bottles so they’re easy to use one-handed!

Nautical_Stripe_DungareesFunky Friday is back! Check out these funky stripy dungarees! The organic cotton fabric is a bit thicker than our organic cotton babygrows, but just as super-soft, so they're perfect for keeping baby snuggly warm in this chilly weather especially when paired with this long-sleeve navy bodysuit.

We love the nautical-style red and white stripes which are a perfect funky unisex choice for baby boys or girls. There are poppers on the inside legs to make nappy changing easier and the buttons at the shoulders will also make for easier dressing.

Both items in this funky little baby outfit are from Little Green Radicals - one of our favourite makers of ethical baby clothes. All the organic cotton is Fairtrade so the cotton farmer and community get a fairer price and other benefits for their labour and produce.

The Nautical Stripe Dungarees are available from Sadie & Frank for £17 in sizes 0-6m and 6-12m. The Long Sleeve Bodysuit is also available in sizes 0-6m and 6-12m priced at £12.

To buy the outfit at a special discounted price of £25 - saving £4 -  enter the code BLOG1 at the checkout.

Dreaming of a Green and Ethical Christmas

I know the Christmas lights are up and the TV ads have started, but today I heard my first Christmas song on the radio so the festivities really must be just around the corner! And that means I must get started on the Christmas shopping… well, at least making a list about it!

It can be tempting to get swept up in a consumer-frenzy at this time of year, buying an ever-increasing amount of presents – especially for the kids – and filling the supermarket shopping trolley to the brim. But more isn’t always best and I think Christmas is truly a time when the cliché ‘quality not quantity’ really means something (and no, that doesn’t have anything to do with the traditional Christmas Quality Street!). There’s something about mass-produced items that make me feel a bit queasy all year-round, but particularly at Christmas it’s so much nicer to give gifts that have been made with love – either by yourself or someone else – and that don’t harm the environment.

Red Bubble Dress

If it's your baby's first Christmas you're probably thinking about what they're going to wear on the big day! If you don't fancy dressing your little girl up as a Christmas pudding/elf/mini Santa then how about this gorgeous organic cotton dress? It's got long sleeves, unlike a lot of party dresses, so there's no worry about baby getting cold or having to find a matching cardigan. The bubble hem is just adorable and makes the dress feel a bit special.

We also love this dress because of its gorgeous red and navy colour - perfect if you're fed up with pink! And the organic cotton is really soft and will keep baby cosy and warm.

This dress is from Little Green Radicals so the organic cotton is also Fairtrade which is even better for the farmer who grow the cotton and their community.

The Red Bubble Dress is priced at £26 and is available in sizes 0-6m and 6-12m from Sadie & Frank.

Rainbow-Stripe-BabygrowThis week's funky Friday favourite is one of our best-selling babygrows - the gorgeous Rainbow Stripe babygrow from Toby Tiger!.  The bright, primary-coloured stripes mean it's a perfect unisex option and a world away from the boring bland cream or lemon choices you're normally confined to. So it makes the perfect gift when you're buying for a yet-to-be-born baby and you don't know if it's a boy or a girl.

It comes from the fabulous Brighton-based brand, Toby TIger, reknowned for the bold, bright colours in their childrenswear. Theeco-friendly dyes are specially long-lasting so the wonderful colours will stay brighter for longer.

As with alll our funky baby clothes, this little beauty is made from 100% organic cotton so it's lovely and soft and will stay that way even after lots of washes.

The Rainbow Stripe babygrow is available in 0-3m, 3-6m and 6-12m, priced at £20.

Multistripe-DressSadie & Frank fans will already know how much we love stripes on our funky organic baby clothes! And we absolutely adore this gorgeous stripy organic jersey dress from Toby Tiger. As with all our baby girls clothes we don't want to be limited to pink so we love the fact that this dress has blue, green, yellow and red as well as pink!

It's fantastically bright and colourful and the bright colours will stay that way because of the azo-free, fibre-reactive dyes.

It's made from 100% organic cotton, so it's extremely soft and comfortable for baby.

The Stripy Jersey Dress is available from www.sadieandfrank.com in 6-12m only for £22. Don't forget our gift-wrapping service if you want to buy it for a friend or relative's little one.

Pacman-Playsuit-1Can you believe Pacman is 31?? This icon of 1980s pop culture features on this super-cool babygrow from Green Eyed Monster. Apart from the funky Pacman design this babygrow is unique because it’s black – an unusual choice for baby clothes, but it’s a perfect unisex option and will certainly make baby stand out from the crowd!

Like all our funky baby clothes the Pacman Babygrow is made from 100% organic cotton and the fabric is incredibly soft. It’s also a made from heavyweight material so it's a lttle bit thicker than some of our other babygrows - perfect for these chilly nights.

There are nickel-free poppers on the shoulder to ensure a snug fit as well as on the inside legs for easier nappy changes. The sizing of this babygrow is generous enough to accommodate real as well as disposable nappies.

The Pacman Babygrow is available in sizes 0-6m and 6-12m and you can buy it now from Sadie & Frank for £19.

Wind_Farm_PlaysuitThe cheeky slogan on this funky babygrow makes everyone smile! We’ve even been jokingly asked if it comes in adult sizes!! The words Wind Farm on an eco-friendly babygrow have such a clever double meaning!

It’s from one of our favourite designers – Little Green Radicals – who have pioneered the use of Fairtrade organic cotton in baby clothes. This means the baby benefits from an extra soft fabric that won’t irritate their delicate skin, the environment benefits from the non-use of harmful pesticides and the farmer who grows the cotton benefits from a premium price paid for their product.

This babygrow has nickel free poppers on the shoulder and on the inside legs that are great for easy dressing and simple nappy changing.

The Wind Farm babygrow is available from Sadie & Frank in sizes 0-3m, 3-6m and 6-12m for £16.

Dragonfly_baby_growThis week we're loving one of our latest products - this funky bright pink babygrow featuring applique dragonflies on the front. We love it because it's bright berry pink - not an insipid, pale, pastel pink! And also because it's from one of our favourite designers - Little Green Radicals - which means it's made from Fairtrade organic cotton. Organic cotton is so much better for the environment and your baby - no nasty chemical residues that could irriate their delicate skin - and it is really soft to the touch. The fact that this is Fairtrade organic cotton is even better for the farmers who grow it and their communities.

You can buy the organic Dragonfly babygrow for £19 from Sadie & Frank in sizes 0-3m, 3-6m and 6-12m.

Save Our Babies From Boring Pastels (Guest Post on ThinkBaby)

in Funky Baby Clothes

Organic_apple_print_babygrowShopping for gorgeous baby clothes has got to be one of the most fun things about new motherhood. But why, oh why, must we be restricted to boring pastels? What is wrong with bright colours for babies? And who decided lemon was the number one unisex colour? This is my recent guest post on the Think Baby Blog about the issue...

Before the arrival of my first little girl, most shopping trips were thwarted because we hadn’t found out her sex and didn’t want to be lumbered with a wardrobe full of whites, creams and the dreaded lemons. Ok, so there’s a firm gender stake on pink and blue (but that’s a whole other blog post!) but what about orange, green, purple and red for the unisex options?

When she was born, the amount of clothes we received as gifts was overwhelming. It was extreme generosity on the part of my friends, family and even random acquaintances, and the vast majority of the outfits were pastel pink. Don’t get me wrong, I proudly pushed around a pink bugaboo, but it was bright pink, not an insipid pale pink. Where were all the brightly coloured clothes?

Reasons to Love Organic Clothes (Guest Post on Poppy Sparkles)

in Ethical issues

As part of Organic September we published a guest post on the Poppy Sparkles blog about

organic cotton zigzag babygrow

why we love organic clothes .... for both babies and the grown-ups.

  1. It’s better for your skin

Organic cotton hasn’t been grown or treated with any toxic chemicals, so the clothes don’t have any nasty residues that could cause allergies, rashes or respiratory problems. It’s a great choice for people with sensitive skin and in particular, babies, whose skin is much thinner than adults. Organic cotton also feels really soft to the touch.

  1. It’s great value

Like organic food, organic clothing can sometimes be a little bit more expensive than non-organic alternatives. But that premium usually means better quality – it will wash well and last longer than cheaper clothing.

in Funky Baby Clothes

It’s Funky Friday and this week we’ve chosen one of our best-selling organic baby t-shirts  as our funkyRecycle-Tantrums-Tshirt favourite.

The cheeky slogan – ‘I Recycle My Tantrums’ – is sure to make you smile! And everyone who peeks into bubba’s pram! We also love the bright purple colour – one of the reasons we launched Sadie & Frank was because we were fed up with boring pastels and neutrals.

The t-shirt is from one of our favourite designers – Little Green Radicals – so as well as being 100% organic, the cotton is Fairtrade, which means the people who grow the cotton are paid extra and their community also benefits financially.

T-shirts are perfect for these last remaining summer days (here’s hoping for an Indian summer in September!) but when the weather gets a little bit cooler, simply layer with a long-sleeve vest and/or cardigan to keep baby snug.

The ‘I Recycle My Tantrums’ organic t-shirt is available in size 0-6m and 6-12m from Sadie & Frank for just £12.

It features the classic Moomintroll character hugging a tree on the front, with bright red trim at the neck and sleeves. It has poppers on the shoulder and on the inside leg to make dressing and changing baby as easy as possible.

And of course it’s made from 100% organic cotton so feels extra-snuggly!

Four fun facts about Moomintroll:

  • He loves the sea and collecting rocks and shells.
  • He thinks that Moominvalley is the safest and most interesting place in the world.
  • His best friend is the maverick vagabond Snufkin and his girlfriend is Snorkmaiden.
  • He loves Moominmamma and his family above all else

You can buy the organic cotton Moomin babygrow from Sadie & Frank in sizes 0-6m and 6-12m, priced at £20.

This week's Funky Friday favourite is the gorgeous Ahoy polo bodysuit from Bamboo Baby. The polo style makes it perfect for the warm summer days when baby only needs one layer, and the buttons at the collar also mean it's easy to get over his head. We love the on-trend nautical stripes and it's available in red/white and navy/white. It's made from 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton so it's gorgeously soft and free from pesticide and chemical residues.

Lollibop

At 11.30am last Friday, the Funky Little Babies - Miss S (2) and Miss B (9 months) - were among the hordes descending on Regents Park for Lollibop. Five hours later they were the sleepiest, most contented little babies on the tube home! It’s fair to say they had a ball!

Polkadot_Sleeveless_SundressIf you love spots and dots then you'll love this week's Funky Friday favourite - this funky summer baby dress from Little Green Radicals. We don’t have much pink here at Sadie & Frank but with its bright raspberry band across the top this Polka Dot Sundress passed our ‘funky’ test! And who can resist polka dots??

Not only is this gorgeous dress made from super-soft organic cotton, it’s also certified Fairtrade. This means that the farmers who grow the cotton get a guaranteed fair price for their product and their local community also benefits from an additional social premium. Little Green Radicals was one of the first companies to bring Fairtrade certified organic cotton baby clothes to the UK and with gorgeous little dresses like this, long may they continue!

You can buy the Polka Dot Sundress here.

The Sadie & Frank Story: Who the Hell are Sadie & Frank anyway?

in The Sadie & Frank Story

People are always asking where our name comes from. We sell funky baby clothes so why did we decide to call our online baby boutique Sadie & Frank? And who the heck are Sadie and Frank anyway??

Well, as anyone who runs a business knows, coming up with a brand name is very, very hard! On top of that, we’re an online only business so the name has to be quick and easy to remember… and spell.

We bounced around a lot of ideas – some were ok, most were pretty rubbish, but occasionally we hit on one that we thought was quite good. Hurrah! We thought. But then we’d do a quick Google search and find out that someone else had already got there. Bugger! We ploughed on and eventually came up with a name we loved and that didn’t appear to be used for an online store.

Unfortunately however, some clever clogs also thought it was a gem and had registered the domain name several years ago. Although it’s not so common these days, you used to read about people making a fortune by registering domain names and then selling them on to people who wanted/needed them for their brand. We did toy with the idea of approaching the registered owner but decided to persevere and try to come up with something original.

Eventually we decided on calling our store Sadie & Frank. Why? Well, there are a few reasons:

  1. We thought using names would give the company a personal feel.
  2. And retro names are coming back into fashion…
  3. And it directly links to a girl and a boy so it would be good for our logo and branding …. we can totally picture a baby Sadie and a baby Frank wearing our funky organic baby clothes!

So who are Sadie & Frank?? Contrary to popular belief they are not children, they are actually the names of my grandparents! There – mystery finally solved!

If you have a baby Sadie or a baby Frank - tell us where you got the name from!

Funky Little Baby Guide: The Name Game

Harper-Seven-Beckham-007Harper Seven. Did you like it? Did you wonder what it meant? Did you roll your eyes at another quirky name from the Beckhams?? Everyone had an opinion didn’t they?

It just goes to show what a minefield it can be when choosing a name for your baby. It’s such an important step and will be something that occupies your mind for your entire pregnancy! Here is our Funky Little Baby Guide to choosing your baby’s name.

Getting ideas

  • Unless you’ve had a favourite name for your baby since you were a child (perhaps a bit weird but apparently some people do!), then it can be fun trawling through the baby name books or websites. You can look through the top name lists - the 2010 list for England & Wales has just been released - but while popular names have their benefits, you might not be so keen on your little Oliver being one of 10 Olivers in his class).
  • On many baby name websites you can search by meaning, origin or by letter. www.nameberry.com is a pretty cool site with a lot of different categories for finding names – for example ‘Boys Names Kids will Love’ and ‘Hipster Baby Names’ – as well as the standard ‘Classic Names’ etc (although being an American site it only shows popularity of a name for the US and you will probably encounter some names that just won't suit a baby on this side of the pond!).

Differences of opinion

  • Hopefully you and your partner have similar ideas on names, whether you go for traditional, modern or, like the Beckhams, quirky! Trouble can flare when you prefer John and he prefers Moon Zappa! This is a tricky one and will probably incur a lot of stress for both of you. There are a few options if this is the case...
  1. Persevere until you find something you can both live with.
  2. Agree a compromise with one of you picking the main name and the other picking the middle name.
  3. If you’re planning on having more than one child, one person gets to pick this name and the other person picks the next child’s name.
  4. Pretend to agree to your partner’s choice but then get to the registry office on your own and register your favourite! Um, ok, perhaps this isn’t the best tip!

Road Testing

  • When you’ve got a shortlist of names check out the initials – Pippa Isabelle Green might sound like a lovely name but the initials? Perhaps not so lovely. In the same vein, make sure you say the name out loud – including any possible shortened versions. Michael Hunt anyone?

To Share or Not

  • Unless you have an unshakeable conviction to your chosen name, do not share it with other people. When you are pregnant people are always asking if you have any names picked out. If you tell them, they will feel compelled to share their opinion on said name. Without any tact at all. When I was having my daughter I quite liked the name Ella – until someone turned up their nose and sang the Rhianna song ‘Umbrella’ to me. (Apologies to anyone with a baby called Ella or who is thinking of using that name. I still think it is lovely!) People will never say rude things about your name when your baby is actually born. Well, unless you’re the Beckhams!

So those are our top tips for naming your baby. What tips or advice would you offer?

PS. If you wondered where we got the names Sadie & Frank then come back to the blog on Wednesday to hear the full story!

Zigzag_lifestyleIt’s Funky Friday and this week we’ve chosen to feature the gorgeous Zigzag Baby grow  from Organics for Kids. Stripes are a favourite here at Sadie & Frank but the zigzags on this adorable romper really stand out. The chocolate and cream combination makes this a brilliant unisex option and is a great alternative to the usual lemon and lavender choices!

It’s got cute green buttons down the front which, as well as looking great, make it easier to get over baby’s head. It also has handy poppers on the inside legs for easy nappy changing.

Organics for Kids is an award-winning company* which makes all its gorgeous organic cotton baby clothes in the UK.

This is one of our best sellers so we’re obviously not the only fans! You can buy the Chocolate ZigZag babygrow here.

Primarily, Sadie & Frank was born out of a love of bright colours and funky designs. We were frustrated with the boring pastels and bland designs that we kept seeing in baby clothes on the high street. But when we decided to launch our own online boutique we also felt passionately about the ethics behind our products.

Welcome to the first Funky Friday on the Funky Little Baby Blog! Every week we’re going to spotlight one of our gorgeous outfits and as this is our first post, we decided to start at the beginning of the alphabet with our A for Apple Babygrow!

Apple_playsuit_lifestyleWe love this babygrow so much we’ve used it on a lot of our promotional materials. It’s a gorgeous bright green colour with a bright red apple appliqué on the front. Like many of our products it’s suitable for both girls and boys – whoever is the apple of their daddy’s eye!

It’s made by Toby Tiger – a brand reknowned for their bright colours. The colours will stay extra bright because they use long-lasting fibre reactive dyes, which are free from harmful azo compounds. And of course it’s made in 100% organic cotton – certified by the Soil Association – which is super-soft and will stay that way after many washes.

It’s not just us who love the Apple Babygrow – if you read our ‘buzz in the blogosphere’ post earlier this week you’ll already know that yummy mummy Mumzy Not can’t wait to dress her new arrival in it and The Green Familia recommended it as a top new baby gift!

The Apple Babygrow is available in sizes 0-6m and 6-12m, priced at £22.

Mumzy Not is a fabulous blog for yummy mummies dedicated to pre and post pregnancy fashion, health and beauty products and gorgeous baby and parenting products. Mumzy Not kindly reviewed some of Sadie & Frank’ls funky organic baby clothes and our eco-friendly gift packaging concluding “if you are looking for baby wear with a difference I truly recommend you visit Sadie and Frank online. Their clothing is top notch, excellently made, guilt free and at competitive prices!” Read the full review on MumzyNotOscarModellingTheElephantBabygrow

‘Mummy Blogger’ Dawn Brown who writes her own blog Knees Up Mother Brown and guest posts on Mummy Loves about her life as a mum of two wrote a great review about our funky Elephants babygrow and also picked out some of her other favourite outfits from our collection. So impressed was Dawn that she ordered another one for a friend who recently had a baby boy saying “It was so nice and packaged so beautifully that I just couldn’t help myself ;)” Read the full review on Mummy Loves. We loved the gorgeous picture that Dawn posted of her little boy Oscar modelling the Elephants )!

Green parenting blog, The Green Familia, has also profiled some of our gorgeous organic baby clothes including our summer dresses, the super-cute Apple babygrow, our range of playsuits for boys, the funky elephants babygrow, and the nautical 'ahoy' bodysuit

Angels & Urchins, the indispensable magazine for parents in London, were also impressed with our bright colours and funky designs – particularly our nautical dress - and mentioned us on their website's fashion news page

Flyer-FrontSadie & Frank is on a mission to get Britain’s babies out of boring pastels and into bright colours and funky designs!

We’ve set up the Funky Little Baby Blog to shine the spotlight on our favourite funky organic clothes and the brands behind them, as well as tell the story of Sadie & Frank.

We’ve also got tons to say about living life with a funky little baby – from things to do and places to go with your little one, to products we love – so we’re going to have a series of Funky Little Baby Guides – look out for the first one on flying with a baby coming soon. And because all our clothes are made from eco-friendly fabrics – organic cotton and bamboo, we’ll also be blogging our green parenting tips (but not in a preachy way!).
